Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area - the Other Side of Las Vegas / Druga strona Las Vegas

[ENG] Las Vegas in the title and some red rocks on the cover picture may not seem an obvious connection. My post on Las Vegas will not show a single hotel nor casino. Instead, I will take you outside of the city and we will explore the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

[ENG] I flew to Las Vegas for a company event. I had one morning at my disposal and used it to the fullest. We rented a car and drove outside of Las Vegas, to the Red Rock National Conservation Area (entry point from Red Rock Canyon Rd, 24km west of Las Vegas). There's a Scenic Drive (21km, one way) thru the park. We weren't there however to have ride. We wanted to hike before being emerged in 2.5 days of training. Given the time limitations we had, we stopped at two points and hiked some 10km total.

[POL] Byłem w Las Vegas służbowo. Miałem do dyspozycji jeden poranek. Wypożyczyliśmy auto i pojechaliśmy za miasto. Przez Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area prowadzi jednokierunkowa droga (wjazd tu, 24km na zachód od Las Vegas). Nie pojechaliśmy jednak na przejażdżkę. Przed 2.5 dniami firmowego szkolenia, chcieliśmy powędrować w naturze. Biorąc pod uwagę ograniczenia czasowe, wybraliśmy dwie krótkie trasy, łącznie 10km.

[ENG] The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area preserves a large area of red rock formations in the Spring Mountains, Nevada. They are mostly made of sandstone and their reddish hue comes from iron oxides. Flash floods have sculpted the terrain to form deep canyons and dramatic walls. The highest peak of the area is La Madre Mt. (2485m a.s.l)

[POL] Park Krajobrazowy Red Rock Canyon chroni dużą grupę formacji skalnych w górach Spring Mountains w Nevadzie. Skały są zbudowane z piaskowców (czyli tak jak Beskidy), z domieszką tlenków żelaza, które nadają im czerwonawy odcień. Gwałtowne powodzie uformowały głębokie kaniony i prawie pionowe ściany. Najwyższym szczytem jest La Madre (2485m n.p.m. - czyli prawie jak nasze Rysy).

[ENG] The area is hot and dry, making vegetation difficult. Only the "die hard" plants can survive there. Most of the rocks are typical grayish or yellowish sandstone and the red-colored rocks typically come in wide strips. 

[POL] Obszar Red Rock Canyon jest gorący i suchy. W takim klimacie mogą przetrwać tylko najwięksi twardziele wśród roślin. Wbrew nazwie, nie wszystkie skały są czerwone. Przeważa szary lub żółtawy piaskowiec, a czerwono zabarwione skały występują w postaci szerokich pasów.

[ENG] The trails all start from the Scenic Drive. There's a rich variety - short and long, easy and difficult. We hiked only for about 3 hours, but one could easily spend the whole day there. All trails are marked with wooden poles and signs. If you choose a longer trail, make sure you carry enough water with you. I drank almost 2l during my 3.5hrs there!

[POL] Od drogi "Scenic Drive", wijącej się przez cały park, odchodzą liczne szlaki turystyczne. Jest ich wiele - krótkie i długie, łatwe i trudne. My spędziliśmy w parku zaledwie trzy godziny, ale można udać się na szlak całodniowy. Wszystkie szlaki są znakowane drewnianymi słupkami. Uwaga - przy dłuższym wędrowaniu koniecznie trzeba zabrać ze sobą spory zapas wody. Ja potrzebowałem prawie 2 litry w ciągu zaledwie 3,4 godziny!

[ENG] While hiking in deep gorges, one may think our planet Earth is an empty and barren place. Only when we climb up a peak, we can appreciate a broader view. It was interesting to see Las Vegas on the plain below us. The city with its casinos and posh hotels seemed so distant, like another world, almost unreal.

[POL] Wędrując głębokimi kanionami można pomyśleć, że nasza Ziemia to pusta i niegościnna planeta. Dopiero wspinając się na któryś szczyt możemy spojrzeć dalej. Kiedy zobaczyliśmy Las Vegas, w pustynnej niecce u naszych stóp, miasto kasyn i luksusowych hoteli wydawało się być innym, nierzeczywistym światem.

[ENG] For me personally, the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area was the high point of my Las Vegas trip. Big thanks to Terry, who organized the trip and was our driver and guide.
