"Råbjerg Mile" Migrating Dunes & North Sea Trail. Wędrujące wydmy i szlak Morza Północnego. [EN/PL]

[ENG] In my post "Hiking at the top of Denmark" I described a sand-buried church and mentioned a natural phenomena of "Råbjerg Mile" migrating dunes. Let's now have a closer look. I spend a whole day hiking around the dunes. Large stretches of my route followed the North Sea Trail (Nordsøstien).

Plan

[POL] Zaparkowałem na darmowym parkingu na północ od Råbjerg Mile. Moja trasa najpierw wiodła nieoznaczoną ścieżką, by spotkać Szlak Morza Północnego. Zaplanowałem fragment wzdłuż oceanu by wrócić ścieżką rowerową i na koniec przejść wydmy południowym skrajem. Link do trasy w opisie zrzutu ekranu z mapką.

[ENG] I left my car on a free parking lot on the northern side of "Råbjerg Mile" migrating dunes. My route started with unmarked path first, but soon it met the North Sea Trail. I had planned a stretch along the ocean coast to return via a cycling path and finally hike across the southern side of the dunes. The link in the photo description opens my route planner.

[POL] Moja wędrówka miała trzy kolory: czerwony, niebieski i żółty. Ruszyłem w trasę tuż po wschodzie słońca (co na północy Danii w grudniu oznacza... 9:00) i pierwsze promienie barwiły wydmy na czerwonawo. Gdy doszedłem do oceanu, dominował oczywiście błękit - nieba i wody. Pomijając zieleń lasu iglastego, koniec był zdecydowanie żółty - jak piaski wydm.

[ENG] My hike had three colors. I started just after the sunrise (which in northern Denmark in December means... 9am). The first rays of sun colored the dunes in red shades. Then I had a long stretch along the ocean - both skies and water were perfectly blue. The end of the trail was yellow as sand on a sunny day. Well, I skipped the green part - but you see it on my photos.

[POL] Wydmy Råbjerg Mile powstały około 300 lat temu nad brzegiem Morza Północnego. Silne wiatry, wiejące głównie z zachodu, przenoszą drobinki piasku na wschód, w stronę Bałtyku (Kattegat). Daje to efekt "wędrującej wydmy". Dzieje się to w czasie rzeczywistym - wydma "pokonuje" ok. 18m rocznie. Efekt wędrowania można więc zaobserwować w czasie ludzkiego życia.

[ENG] Råbjerg Mile, migrating dunes, were formed some 300 years ago on the shore of the North Sea. The prevailing westerlies move particles of sand eastwards, towards the Baltic (Kattegat). This creates an effect of "migrating dunes". It happens in real time. The dunes "travel" some 18m per year. Therefore it is possible to observe the migration in the course of one's lifetime. 

[POL] Tam gdzie dociera wydma, zamiera życie. Drzewa i rośliny nie mają szans na przeżycie pod piaskiem. Ale gdy wydma przejdzie - co zajmuje ok. 40 lat - roślinność powraca. Proces wietrzenia po stronie nawietrznej trwa tak długo, dopóki piasek nie odsłoni wód gruntowych. A ten zmienia się co roku. W efekcie po przejściu wydmy powstają nierówności terenu. Zagłębienia wypełnia woda. Powraca tam roślinność. I w ten sposób po stronie nawietrznej tworzą się małe, płytkie jeziorka. Nie mają określonej granicy, czasem zupełnie wysychają. 

[ENG]  Trees and other plants that are covered by the mile are eradicated. It takes about 40 years for the mile to pass. However, plant growth will quickly return in the form of grasses and similar fast-spreading plants that grow well in sandy soil and a lot of wind. The west side is called the blowing surface, and from here the sand is carried by the prevailing westerly wind and settles on the steep east side of the dune. The sand is removed from the vent surface as long as it is dry, so the flight ceases when the groundwater table is reached. As the groundwater level will vary from year to year, the "footprint" of the mile will have depressions where lakes are formed, called "mile lakes", which can, however, dry out in periods.

[POL] Te ciekawe informacje wyczytałem później. W czasie wędrówki po prostu cieszyłem się widokami i samotnością. Było bardzo przyjemnie, poza tym, że jeziorka po nawietrznej nie zawsze mają zdefiniowane granice. W dwóch miejscach zrobiłem spore obejścia, żeby nie przechodzić przez wodę, która kryje się pod pięknym wrzosowiskiem.

[ENG] I read all those interesting facts after my hike. Walking there, I simply enjoyed the views and the solitude. I don't not however enjoy backtracking to find a dry land, as the trail winded among the "mile lakes". They don't have defined banks and often spill out. I had to make detours via surrounding heath. However beautiful, the heath can be tricky - underneath the shrubs there's plenty of water.

[POL] Zostawiam wydmy - wrócę do nich na koniec. Teraz przede mną długi i przyjemny odcinek wzdłuż Morza Północnego. Na początek zaskoczenie - plaża wygląda na zalaną cienką warstwą wody. Oczywiście - po zachodnie stronie Danii pływy morskie są zdecydowanie wyraźniejsze niż na wschodnim wybrzeżu

[ENG] Leaving the dunes, where I would return at the end of my hike, I reached the North Sea. My very first observation is that there is a thin layer of water over the wide beach. It's the tidal effect, which is observed on the western coast of Denmark but hardly exists on the eastern coast. 

[POL] Nie grozi mi zatopienie - przypływ osiąga ok. 30cm. A ja docieram na brzeg w czasie odpływu. Plaża jest szeroka. Ma dwie podłużne części - przy wydmach wciąż jest woda z ostatniego przypływu. Ale między nią a morzem właściwym jest pas piasku. Znajduje się minimalnie wyżej niż poziom morza. Jest wilgotny i ubity - przez to idealny do marszu.

[ENG] The high tide, if it comes, cannot drown me. Here it reaches about 30cm. Where I reach the coast, however, it's the low tide. The beach is as wide as it gets. There are two parts, parallel to the water line. Next to the dunes there's still water from the previous high tide. But between it and sea proper, the land is minimally higher. The water is gone, the sand is wet and hard. It makes an ideal walking surface.

[POL] Mój spacer wzdłuż Morza Północnego sprzed tygodnia był całkiem przyjemny. Dzisiejszy jest przyjemny do kwadratu. Pomimo grudnia dzień jest słoneczny, całkiem ciepły. I przede wszystkim prawie bezwietrzny. Jestem sam, nie licząc ptaków. Można tak iść bez końca. Nie czekam jednak na spotkanie ludzi mówiących... po portugalsku (tam byłby koniec!), skręcam w stronę lądu razem ze szlakiem Nordsøstien.

[ENG] My previous weekend's hike along the North Sea coast was quite pleasant. Today, however, is double pleasant. Despite mid-December, it is sunny, warm-ish and most importantly - there's no wind. I am alone - well, there are sea birds. I could go like endlessly. The end of my walk would be meeting... Portuguese speaking people. I however turn inland when the Nordsøstien trail does so.

Greenish interlude

[POL] Kompozycja postu wokół trzech kolorów dobrze brzmi. Nie oddaje jednak pełni mojej wędrówki. Po zejściu z plaży a przed powrotem na wydmy mam przed sobą 11km ścieżki rowerowej. A tu kolorów jest więcej. Najwięcej chyba zieleni - a mamy przecież grudzień! Najpierw las iglasty, potem droga między polami.

[ENG] I had an idea to compose my blog post around three colors. It would however do harm to the middle part of my trail. It was 11km along a cycling path. I was surprised to find green being the dominant color there - after all it's mid-December!

[POL] Na 11km wzdłuż drogi asfaltowej nie spotykam żadnych ludzi. Mija mnie może pięć samochodów. Są za to konie. Pas wzdłuż drogi jest wykoszony specjalnie na potrzeby ścieżki dla zwolenników turystyki konnej. Pomimo mokrej trawy, idzie mi się nim lepiej niż po asfalcie.

[ENG] Walking 11km along an asphalt road I met no people. About 5 cars passed by me. But I did see horses. There are plenty riding paths in that area. When they go along the road, there's a narrow belt of clipped grass next to the hard surface, suitable for horse shoes. I prefer that surface to asphalt.

[POL] Głównym celem wędrówki są wydmy Råbjerg Mile. Zostawiłem je sobie na koniec. Wydmy w środku lądu to fenomen natury. W przypadku tych duńskich, także efekt działalności człowieka. Pod koniec XVIII wieku wędrujące wydmy stały się problemem w całej północnej Danii. Wystarczy wspomnieć zasypany kościół pod Skagen. Podjęto wówczas kroki mające na celu zatrzymanie tej wędrówki.

[ENG] Råbjerg Mile migrating dunes were the main reason of my hike. I left them for the desert - quite literally, if you misplace the emphasis :-) Dunes mid-land are a phenomenon of nature. In case of the Danish ones, human intervention played a role, too. By the end of XVIII century, migrating dunes had become a real problem in northern Denmark. Let me just mention the sand-buried church near Skagen. The powers that be decided to do something about it.

[POL] Co jednak człowiek może zrobić? Duńskie władze postanowiły wykorzystać... naturę przeciw naturze. Rozpoczęto program nasadzania roślinności na wydmach. Prowadzony mądrze i konsekwentnie, program przyniósł - w dłuższym okresie czasu - spodziewane skutki. Wędrówka wydm została zatrzymana. Oprócz jednej - Råbjerg Mile pozostawiono celowo, by zachować fenomen natury dla potomnych. Przy okazji, nazwa Råbjerg oznacza "surowa góra" (mile to piaszczysta wydma).

[ENG] Easy said, but what can humans do against the power of nature? Denmark used nature... against nature. Plants were used to slow down or stop the migration of dunes. The program had been conducted wisely and consistently over years and brought about desired results. The migration of dunes has been contained. Except in one place - yes, you guessed it -  Råbjerg Mile migrating dunes. By the way, the name "Råbjerg" means in Danish "raw hill" ("mile" is a sandy dune).

[POL] Wiedzieliście, że wrzosowiska są podmokłe? Ja nie. A powinienem - bo takie widziałem na początku wędrówki. Na sam koniec zafundowałem sobie przygodę - przejście na skróty przez wrzosowisko. Jak mawiał mój matematyk w liceum:

Skrót to najdłuższy odcinek łączący punkty A i B...

Wrzosowisko w grudniu to niskie, z pozoru suche krzaczki. Z pozoru - bo rosną w wodzie albo na podmokłym gruncie. Początkowo próbowałem omijać widoczną wodę skacząc na kępki trawy. Ale mając do wyboru skręconą kostkę lub mokro w butach, wybrałem to drugie. Mokre skarpetki, nawet w grudniu, to bezpieczniejszy wybór niż zostanie na mokradłach po zmroku...

[ENG] Did you know that heather grows in water? I didn't. Although I should have - after my early morning experience. Nevertheless, I decided for a shortcut thru a heath. It looks like dry little shrubs, but the underneath the plants there's water and boggy ground. I first tried to jump between tufts of grass. But a having a choice - we shoes or twisted ankle, I went for the former. Wet socks won't kill me, even in December. Ankle injury could mean staying in the bog till dark... My high school math teacher would define a shortcut as:

the longest route between points A & B...

[POL] Pomimo mokrych butów na koniec, cała wyprawa była bardzo udana. Cuda natury, piękne i różnorodne widoki, rewelacyjna jak na grudzień pogoda, brak tłumów (widziałem więcej koni niż ludzi - a przeszedłem 23km...). To wszystko składa się na perfekcyjną wyprawę.

[ENG] Even though I ended the hike with wet shoes, it was an excellent day. Phenomena of nature, gorgeous and varied views, "un-Decemberesque" weather, lack of crowds (in fact I saw more horses than people, and that's on a 23km hike...). The sum of these makes a perfect hiking day.
