[ES] Si lee mi blog, sabe que camino mucho en las montañas. He escrito cuatro artículos en español sobre mis excursiones. Hoy tengo una sorpresa – en lugar de montañas, vamos a explorar una ciudad. Lea de mi paseos por Bilbao.

[EN] If you read my blog, you will know that I hike a lot. Most of my articles are about my mountain trips. This one is a surprise - instead of mountains, we are going to explore a city. Read on on my Bilbao walks.

[ES] He visitado tres ciudades en España: Madrid, Barcelona y Bilbao. Cada una varias veces aunque solo por trabajo. Tuve muchas noches para explorar estas ciudades. No soy una persona que gasta tiempo en los bares. Soy inquisitivo y me encanta conocer lugares interesantes y aprender sus historias.

Madrid y Barcelona son ciudades grandes y tienen muchas lugares turísticos. Sin embargo, a mí, me encanta Bilbao. Es mi ciudad favorita de España y de Europa también. Tal vez, porque Bilbao no es tan grande como Madrid y no hay tanto turista como en Barcelona. Es una ciudad muy hermosa y amable. El centro es compacto y todo está cerca. Cuando estaba allí, tuve algo de tiempo libre después de un día de trabajo. Casi cada noche paseaba por la ciudad. Acompáñame y te enseñaré mis paseos de Bilbao.

[EN] I have visited three cities in Spain: Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao. All trips were for work. I had quite a few night to explore each city. I am not a person who wastes time in bars. I am inquisitive and I like to see places and learn their history.

Madrid and Barcelona are great cities with a lot tourist places. However, I am enchanted by Bilbao. It is my favorite city of Spain and perhaps of Europe as well. Part of it is that Bilbao is not as large as Madrid and is not visited by so many tourists as Barcelona. Bilbao is a beautiful and friendly city. Its center is quite compact and everything is nearby. When I was there, I had only free time in the evenings. So I used almost every night to have a walk. Join me in walks of Bilbao.

El Museo / The Museum

[ES] Cuando se escribe ‘el museo’ en el contexto de Bilbao, creo que todos piensan en ‘el Museo Guggenheim’. Cierto, es el museo más famoso. Vamos a ver el edificio espectacular y el arte que guarda dentro. Pero recuerda, este no es el único museo de Bilbao. He visitado el Museo Bilbao también.

[EN] When we read 'the museum' of Bilbao., I am sure all will think 'Guggenheim Museum'. Sure, it is the most famous museum of the city. We are going to see the splendid building and the art stored there. But remember, it's not the only museum in Bilbao. I have also visited the Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts.

[ES] El edificio de Museo Guggenheim es estupendo. Tengo muchas fotos del museo. Cada lado del edificio es diferente. La forma es irregular. La construcción es muy moderna. El museo está al lado del rio, cerca del puente que conecta la ciudad con la carretera al aeropuerto. A veces, los edificios modernos no encajan bien con sus ambientes de alrededor. Sin embargo, el Museo Guggenheim parece una parte integral de la ciudad.

[EN] The building of the Guggenheim museum is spectacular. I have a lot of photos of it. Each side is different. Its form is irregular. Its construction is very modern. The museum is situated by a river, near an bridge. Many times modern building do not fit well their surroundings. However, the Guggenheim Museum is an integral part of the city landscape.

[ES] Hace 30 años el lugar del museo estaba feo y sucio. Hubo una zona industrial allí. Bilbao era una ciudad de astilleros e industrias químicas. El rio Nervión estaba muy contaminado. Cuando muchas industrias quebraron, la ciudad de Bilbao parecía no tener ninguna esperanza. Sin industrias la gente estaba desempleada y la ciudad no tenía suficientes ingresos tributarios. Entonces vino el Guggenheim a la ciudad y la ha cambiado.

[EN] Some 30 years ago there was no museum and the area was ugly and dirty. It was an industrial zone. Bilbao was a city of shipyards and chemical industry. The river Nervión was polluted. Then, when many industries went bankrupt, there seemed to be no hope for Bilbao. Without the industries people were unemployed and the city didn't have sufficient funds. Then came Guggenheim and changed the city.

[ES] Ahora el área alrededor del museo es una zona muy hermosa. El edificio del museo, el puente, mucho verde, lugares para jugar y para relajación – todo construye una buena y muy agradable composición. Este zona es mi favorita de Bilbao.

[EN] Today the area around the museum is a beautiful place. The building, the bridge, a lot of green, places for sports and relaxation - all makes a pleasant composition. It's my favorite area of Bilbao.

[ES] Tuve dos oportunidades de visitar el museo. Mi segunda visita fue fantástica. El museo exhibia una exposición temporal sobre los impresionistas y postimpresionistas. Vi obras de todos grandes pintores – Renoir, Monet, Gauguin, Cézanne… También había pinturas de Van Gogh y Picasso. Pero la primera vez las obras dentro del museo no me parecían ‘arte’. Una línea roja en un fondo blanco – es arte? O una ‘escultura’ de planchas? En fin, no entiendo el arte moderno.

[EN] I had two opportunities to visit the museum. My second visit was fantastic. There was a temporary exhibition on the impressionists and postimpressionists. I saw paintings of all the greatest artists - Renoir, Monet, Gauguin, Cézanne… There were also works of an Gogh and Picasso. However, my first visit was disappointing. I didn't see any 'art'. A red line on a white canvas - is it art? Or a 'sculpture' of irons? Well, I don't understand modern art.

[ES] Continuamos mis paseos por Bilbao. Esta extraña palabra significa ‘siete calles’ en el idioma de los Vascos, euskera. Siete Calles o Casco Viejo es el barrio medieval y centro histórico de Bilbao. Por cierto – el nombre de la ciudad en euskera es Bilbo. Me encantan las ciudades medievales. Me gustan sus calles estrechas, los grandes edificios de los ayuntamientos y las iglesias viejas. Son mis zonas favoritas en todos las ciudades que he visitado. En mi país, Polonia, mi favorita ciudad vieja es la de Cracovia (Kraków).

[EN] This strange name translates as 'seven streets" in the language of the Basques, Euskera. Seven Streets or Old Town (Es: Casco Viejo) is the medieval core and historical center of the city. I love medieval cities. I am enchanted by their narrow streets, grand town halls and old churches. They are always my favorite places in the cities I have visited. In my home country, Poland, my favorite old town is that of Cracow (Kraków) 

[ES] El Casco Viejo de Bilbao se extiende a lo largo del rio – naturalmente. Hay algunos puentes de piedra. Esta la vieja iglesia de San Antón y también la catedral de Santiago. Además, hay un mercado de pescados y mariscos; el mercado funciona todavía (Mercado de Ribera). El edificio más grande del Casco Viejo es el teatro. No es tan antiguo como la catedral, ya que es del siglo XIX.

[EN] The Old Town is located along the river - of course. There are few stone bridges. There is the old church of San Antón and the cathedral of St. James. There is a fish market hall  (Mercado de Ribera) - it is still operating as such. The biggest building of the old town is a theater. It's not as old as the cathedral, it was built in the XIX century.
