Garden of the gods Park, Colorado Springs. Day one of US Southwest Road Trip April 2026 [ENG/POL].

One year after my first "America the Beautiful" road trip, I am back on the road in Southwest US. This time we are a group of 9 and will drive 5,000km across Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. The first stop - and an appetizer - is Garden of the gods Park in Colorado Springs.

[POL] Rok po pierwszej podróży po płd-zach. USA wracamy do Stanów Zjednoczonych. Tym razem w sile 9 osób przejedziemy 5tys km przez Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona i Utah. Pierwszy przystanek - i przystawka - to park 'Garden of the gods' w Colorado Springs.

Each day of my April 2026 road trip had been designed to move down the planned route (a 15 days loop from Denver) and stop for hikes. The first stage was Denver to Buena Vista, Colorado, with stops at Garden of the gods and Florissant Fossil Beds. The latter had closed before we reached it. 

[POL] Każdy dzień podróży był zaplanowany, aby przesuwać się po zaplanowanej pętli (15 dni ze startem i metą w Denver) i zatrzymywać się na trekkingi. Pierwszy etap prowadził z Denver do Buena Vista, Colorado, z wędrówkami pieszymi w Garden of the gods i Florissant Fossil Beds. To drugie miejsce niestety zamknęło się nim zdążyliśmy dojechać.

We were a group of 9. The plan was to start from Denver, CO and travel the first 8 days together to Mt Carmel Junction, UT. There we would split - four people and I would close the loop to Denver, while the other four would divert west, heading to Los Angeles, CA. Obviously, my story (expect more posts - on per day of our trip!) covers only my group - a 15 days, 5,000km loop starting and ending in Denver, CO. We rented a Dodge Durango (SUV, 7 seats - brand new!) from Sixt and spent our first night at La Quinta Inn and Suites, Denver Airport, CO.

[POL] Zaczęliśmy podróż w grupie 9 osób w Denver (Colorado). Plan zakładał wspólną podróż przez pierwsze 8 dni, po czym rozdzieliśmy się. Moja grupa (5 osób) zamknęła pętlę do Denver a pozostałe 4 osoby pojechały do Los Angeles, (California). Moja opowieść (ten post to pierwszy odcinek serii!) dotyczy mojej grupy - w ciągu 15 dni przejedziemy 5tys km pętlą z początkiem i końcem w Denver (Colorado). Wypożyczyliśmy w Sixt nowiutki Dodge Durango (SUV z 7 miejscami). Pierwszą noc spaliśmy w La Quinta Inn and Suites, Denver Airport, (Colorado).  

Our first destination is Colorado Springs and Garden of the gods Park. We stopped on the I-25 highway to appreciate our first view of the Rocky Mountains. To be specific, it was the Front Range of Southern Rockies.

[POL] Naszym pierwszym celem jest Colorado Springs i park 'Garden of the gods'. Po drodze z Denver zatrzymaliśmy się przy punkcie widokowym na autostradzie I-25 aby po raz pierwszy popatrzeć na Góry Skaliste. Konkretnie - pasmo Front Range w południowej części łańcucha. 

In 1909 children of Charles Elliott Perkins, a wealthy railroads tycoon, deeded the 'Garden of the gods' Park to the city of Colorado Springs. There was one condition, though - access to the Park must be forever free. The city has kept their side of the deal ever since and so we hiked this beautiful place for free, including no parking fee.

[POL] W 1909 roku spadkobiercy Charles'a Elliott'a Perkins'a, zamożnego magnata kolejowego, przekazali teren parku 'Garden of the gods'  miastu Colorado Springs. Donacja miała jeden warunek - wstęp do parku ma na zawsze pozostać darmowy. Miasto dotrzymało słowa i mogliśmy spacerować w tym pięknym miejscu za darmo, w tym parking i toalety.

The name 'Garden of the gods' was coined in 1859 when two surveyors from Denver were exploring and measuring the terrain for what would soon become Colorado Springs. Awed by the beauty of the place one of them commented that it would be an excellent place for a beer garden. The other, Rufus Cable, exclaimed "Biergarten! Why it is a fit place for the gods to assemble. We will call it the Garden of the gods."

[POL] Nazwa 'Ogród bogów' powstała w czasie wizyty dwóch geodetów z Denver, którzy mieli za zadanie wykonać pomiary pod miasto, które wkrótce będzie znane jako Colorado Springs. Zachwyceni pięknem tego miejsca, jeden z nich rzucił uwagę, że byłoby to dobre miejsce na ogródek piwny. Drugi, Rufus Cable, wykrzyknął "Ogródek piwny! Przecież to miejsce może być miejscem spotkań bogów. Nazwiemy je 'Ogród bogów'".

The two explorers were not aware that this place had been known as 'creation garden'  in the mythology of Ute nation. Ute, Apache, Comanche and other Native American nations had known this place for centuries.

[POL] Dwaj mierniczy nie mieli świadomości, że w mitologii narodu Ute to miejsce było znane jako 'ogród stworzenia'. Ute, Apache, Comanche i inni rdzenni amerykanie znali ten ogród od stuleci.

The geological history is more puzzling than the origins of the name. Tucked between the flat expanse of Great Plains (Prairies) and monumental granite peaks of Rocky Mountains, the Garden's red rocks seem not to fit any of the two. The red and pink sandstone had been first deposited in horizontal layers, as any sedimentary rocks. Then the forces of nature tilted them vertically and faulted into the fins we can admire today.

[POL] Historia geologiczna jest jeszcze ciekawsza. Skały z czerwonego piaskowca, położone na granicy Wielkich Równin (Prerii) i majestatycznych granitów Gór Skalistych, zdają się nie pasować do żadnej z tych krain. Są to skały osadowe, które pierwotnie były ułożone horyzontalnie. Siły natury podniosły je i przewróciły, formując charakterystyczne 'płetwy rekina'.

Garden of the gods Park was our very first hike during the 2026 US Southwest road trip. It is an amazing place but in retrospective, it was 'just an appetizer' for what we would later see in Arizona and Utah. Before that, however, we would drive two days southwards, along the ranges of southern Rockies of Colorado and New Mexico. We would therefore swap red sandstone for grey granite covered with white snow caps. 

[POL] Park Garden of the gods był pierwszym przystankiem w naszej podróży po południowo-zachodnich stanach USA. To przepiękne miejsce, patrząc z perspektywy całej wyprawy, było 'tylko przystawką' do późniejszych scenerii Arizony czy Utah. Zanim tam jednak dotrzemy, mamy przed sobą dwa dni jazdy na południe przez Colorado i New Mexico, wzdłuż pasm południowych Gór Skalistych. Zostawiamy na ten czas czerwone piaskowce na rzecz szarych granitów przykrytych białymi czapami śniegu.

During the drive to Buena Vista, CO, we stopped for a late lunch at Cafe Leo in Woodland. While their sandwiches were tasty and I'd recommend swinging by, I pointed a fun fact to my group. We were having coffee and sandwiches at 2590m a.s.l. The highest peak of Poland, Rysy in Tatra Mts, rises to 2500m a.s.l...

[POL] Po drodze na nocleg do Buena Vista (Colorado), zatrzymaliśmy się na późny lunch w Cafe Leo w Woodland. Dobre sandwicze są warte zatrzymania się, ale zwróciłem mojej grupie uwagę na ciekawy fakt - pijemy kawę na wysokości 2590m n.p.m., wyżej niż szczyt Rysów!

We enjoyed the lunch, but the time spent there cost us not reaching Florissant Fossil Beds before closure. We therefore drove to Buena Vista, CO. The name is not accidental ('good view' in Spanish) - just before the town we pulled over to admire majestic Collegiate Peaks (Sawatch Range of Rocky Mountains). It's a group of peaks reaching over 4,000m a.s.l., named after American top universities - Harvard, Princeton, Yale etc.

[POL] Lunch nam smakował, ale czas spędzony na przełęczy kosztował nas dotarcie do Florissant Fossil Beds już po zamknięciu. Pozostało nam zatem jechać dalej, na nocleg do Buena Vista. Nazwa zobowiązuje ('dobry widok' z hiszpańskiego) - tuż przed miasteczkiem zatrzymaliśmy się aby podziwiać majestatyczne Collegiate Peaks (część pasma Sawatch Range Gór Skalistych).  Nazwa 'collegiate' ('szczyty akademickie') bierze się od najwyższych szczytów pasma, wznoszących się na ponad 4tys m n.p.m., nazwanych od wiodących amerykańskich uczelni - Harvard, Princeton, Yale itd.
