Paria Canyon Vermilion Cliffs aka the Wave - Unreal Arizona/Utah. US Road Trip 2026: Day 8 [POL/ENG]

Paria Canyon Vermilion Cliffs is a name that means nothing to an average tourist. Some seasoned hikers may have heard about Coyote Buttes North. But how about THE WAVE? It's a secluded place on Arizona / Utah border where only 64 persons are permitted per day - at maximum. Many Americans and tourist take part in the permit lottery over and over again. My attempts in 2025 had been unsuccessful. This year, however, we won the permit. It's once-in-a-lifetime experience and I feel blessed and grateful for the opportunity of hiking there.

To ukryte miejsce na granicy Arizona / Utah, gdzie maksymalnie 64 osoby dziennie dostają pozwolenie na wejście. Wielu Amerykanów i zagranicznych turystów próbuje wielokrotnie szczęścia w loterii. W 2025 nie udało się. W tym roku, jednakże, wygraliśmy los. To szansa raz na sto lat i jestem niezmiernie wdzięczny, że mogłem w tym miejscu wędrować.

Paria Canyon Vermilion Cliffs - Coyote Buttes North aka The Wave, near Kanab, UT/AZ

Coyote Buttes North is just a small part of the Paria Canyon Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, but the permit area has some of the most visually striking geologic sandstone formations in the world, including The Wave. There are two types of lotteries for the permit - Advanced (4 months ahead; 48 slots available for any day) and Daily (2 days ahead but only within a designated geo area; 16 slots available daily). Lottery ticket costs $6. The winner can take up to 5 people with them. Entrance fee is $7 per hiker. The lottery is managed by US Bureau of Land Management via Recreation.gov web page. [POL] Coyote Buttes North to niewielki fragment chronionego obszaru o nazwie Paria Canyon Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, ale część objęta system pozwoleń, The Wave, to jedne z najbardziej atrakcyjnych wizualnie formacji geologicznych na świecie. Pozwolenie można uzyskać tylko drogą loterii. Są dwie opcje - z wyprzedzeniem (4 miesiące wcześniej, 48 dostępnych pozwoleń) oraz dzienna (2 dni wcześniej, 16 pozwoleń - dostępna tylko na ograniczonym obszarze w pobliżu). Osoba, która wygrała los, może zabrać kolejnych 5 na szlak. Udział w loterii kosztuje 6 dolarów od losu a samo wejście to dodatkowe 7 dolarów od osoby. Szczegóły można uzyskać na stronie Recreation.gov.

Although there is no 'Visitor Center', wilderness rangers patrol the area. Entering the protected part without a permit may result in a $100,000 fine and/or 6 months imprisonment.

[POL] Na miejscu nie ma 'Visitor Center', ale obszar jest patrolowany przez strażników. Wędrówka bez pozwolenia może skończyć się mandatem 100tys dolarów (to nie pomyłka - sto tysięcy dolarów!) i/lub 6-miesięcznym więzieniem.

The Wave is located within Paria Canyon Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness. As the name suggest, it is a wilderness. The parking and trailhead are 13,5km away from US-89 highway between Page, AZ and Kanab, UT. It's a dirt road - good when dry, but impassable after rains. Here is the exact section on Google Maps.

[POL] Formacja the Wave jest zlokalizowana w Paria Canyon Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness. Jak nazwa wskazuje, jest to obszar z dala od cywilizacji. Parking i początek szlaku znajdują się 13,5km od drogi US-89 pomiędzy Page (Arizona) i Kanab (Utah). Droga jest szutrowa - dość dobra gdy jest sucho, ale zupełnie nie przejezdna po opadach. Tutaj link do tej drogi na Google Maps.  

The parking is free. There is a dry toilet and some information boards. Note that there are no shops - bring enough water and snacks with you. Hikers are asked to write down their contact info into a log book. Provide your telephone number, but more importantly - as there is no cellular coverage - write down a number to a friend outside of the area.

[POL] Parking jest darmowy. Znajdziemy tam suchą toaletę i tablice informacyjne. Uwaga - nie ma żadnej gastronomii - wodę i jedzenie należy przywieźć ze sobą. Ruszając na szlak wpisujemy się do księgi wejść - podajemy swój telefon oraz kontakt do osoby poza tym obszarem (na miejscu nie ma zasięgu!).

The trail leading to the Wave is marked only at the beginning. After a while sign posts disappear and hikers need to navigate the land themselves. A paper map with directions is provided with the permit. It's wise to save the trail up front in a mobile app - make sure it is available offline.

[POL] Szlak do the Wave jest oznaczony tylko na początku. Gdy słupki znikają, musimy radzić sobie sami. Razem z pozwoleniem otrzymaliśmy broszurkę z instrukcjami. Warto wcześniej przygotować sobie szlak w aplikacji turystycznej - ale musi być dostępna bez zasięgu.

After a few initial turns and a bit of an uphill path, the area is flat, dotted with buttes. It makes navigation both easy and challenging. Easy - because there are no trees nor major hills obstructing the landscape. Difficult - because 'flat' here means hundreds of possible routes between rocks and shrubs. This said, for any seasoned hiker, getting to the Wave is not a big challenge. The challenge, however, is the scorching sun. We were there in April, which probably the best time to visit (lottery for April slots is in December of the previous year).

[POL] Gdy zostawiamy za sobą ostatni znak, przed nami rozciąga się płaski obszar, upstrzony skałami. Nawigacja jest równocześnie łatwa i trudna. Łatwa - bo nic nie zasłania widoku. Trudna - bo nie ma jednej, wyraźnej ścieżki. Ale dla doświadczonych wędrowców dotarcie do celu nie powinno być większym problemem. Wyzwaniem natomiast jest palące słońce. Nasza wędrówka miała miejsce w kwietniu, co jest prawdopodobnie najlepszą porą (loteria na wejścia w kwietniu odbywa się w grudniu poprzedzającego roku).

The Wave, being so secluded and hard to get to, brings high expectations. However, don't fall for the hype and rush to the destination. The landscape on the 6km trail is worth noticing on its own. We are in the land of red sandstone, which created fantastic forms and shapes.

[POL] The Wave, jako miejsce trudno dostępne, niesie ze sobą duże oczekiwania. Jednakże nie warto się spieszyć. 6km do pokonania jest atrakcją samą w sobie. Jesteśmy w krainie czerwonego piaskowca, który tworzy niesamowite formy i kształty.

It took us about one hour and half to get to the Wave. Then time stopped. I had planned two more short hikes for later in the day, but when I saw the Wave, I knew I wanted to stay there and take in the landscape.

[POL] Do celu dotarliśmy po około półtorej godziny. I wtedy czas się zatrzymał. Wcześniej planowałem jeszcze dwa inne, krótkie szlaki na drugą część dnia. Ale gdy zobaczyłem the Wave, wiedziałem, że chcę tam być jak najdłużej.

Against my own blogging style, I won't describe the Wave nor will I give a lecture on its geological history. I was awed and grateful. I felt blessed and special. Enjoy the place with me. 

[POL] Wbrew mojemu własnemu stylowi, nie będę opisywał the Wave ani nie zrobię wykładu na temat geologicznej historii formacji. Byłem po prostu w podziwie. Była we mnie wdzięczność i poczucie wyjątkowości. Popatrz ze mną na to wyjątkowe miejsce.

The Wave is not just one fancy rock. Coyote Buttes North form a small plateau with more fantastic shapes. There is no marked trail, but I recommend exploring the area to get a better feeling of this out-worldly place.

[POL] The Wave nie jest pojedynczą skałą. Coyote Buttes North to niewielki płaskowyż, usiany fantastycznymi formacjami. Nie ma tam znakowanego szlaku, ale polecam obejście tego obszaru dookoła aby lepiej poczuć to niesamowite miejsce.

I lost any sense of time. Checking photo timestamps, I realized that we had spent 6 hours in Paria Canyon Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness. 6 hours to hike 13 kilometers...

[POL] Straciłem poczucie czasu. Dopiero sprawdzając czasy zdjęć, zdałem sobie sprawę, że spędziliśmy w Paria Canyon Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness 6 godzin. 6 godzin na przejście 13 kilometrów...
