Dzień był przeznaczony na The Wave. To miejsce jest tak niezwykłe, że możliwość wejścia otrzymuje jedynie maksymalnie 60 osób dziennie. Pozwolenia przyznawane są w loterii (koszt 6$). Niestety nie mieliśmy szczęścia. Trudno, ale dzień nie był stracony. Odwiedziliśmy kilka ciekawych miejsc wokół Page w Arizonie. Główny punkt dnia to Horseshoe Bend.

The day had been planned for The Wave. It's so extraordinary place, that a maximum of 60 people can enter daily. Permits are awarded in a lottery (entry is $6). We were not lucky, unfortunately. But we wouldn't sit idly. We did several short trips around Page in Arizona. The highlight of the day was Horseshoe Bend.   

Glen Canyon Dam

Zaczęliśmy od zapory Glen Canyon Dam. Przegroda na rzece Kolorado zamyka jezioro Powell, drugi co do wielkości sztuczny zbiornik w USA. (Największym jest jezioro Mead, utworzone przez Zaporę Hoovera na tej samej rzece Kolorado). Zaporę oddano do użytku w 1966r. Jej wysokość to 220m a długość - 480m. Jezioro Powell powstałe w kanionie Glen ma ma prawie 300km długości, ale tylko maksymalnie 40km szerokości. Ciekawostka - nieregularna linia brzegowa to ponad 3tys. km - więcej niż pacyficzne wybrzeże USA!

We started the day at Glen Canyon Dam. Built on Colorado river, the dam creates Lake Powell, the second largest artificial reservoir in the USA. (The largest is Lake Mead, downstream the same Colorado river and created by the Hoover Dam). It was opened in 1966. The dam is 220m high and spans 480m. Lake Powell is almost 300km long, and 40km wide in its maximum point. The irregular shore stretches over 3,000 km and is longer than USA's Pacific coast!

Tama oferuje niesamowite widoki, na jezioro Powell i rzekę Kolorado. Przy tamie znajduje się Centrum Informacyjne, gdzie można zapoznać się z historią budowy oraz geologią płaskowyżu Kolorado. Na moście spinającym brzegi rzeki mieliśmy okazję zaobserwować transport ogromnej łodzi.

The dam offers views of Lake Powell and the Colorado River. There is Visitor's Center, where one can learn about the construction of the dam and geology of Colorado Plateau. During our visit we witnessed a big boat being transported over the bridge that spans the banks of the river.

Beehive Trail

Z zapory podjechaliśmy na pobliski kemping, skąd zaczyna się krótka pętla Beehive Trail. Lekka trasa, z ciekawymi widokami. Nie jest to miejsce warte specjalnego przyjazdu, ale jeśli jesteśmy w Page, jest to dobra opcja na krótki spacer. Charakterystyczny dla Arizony czerwony piasek, nieliczne pustynne rośliny i grupa pofalowanych skał z piaskowca.

Not far from the dam, there's a small camping, where a short loop trail starts - Beehive Trail. It's an easy walk, with interesting views. I have to say it's not a place worth coming just for the sake of it, but if you are in Page, it makes a good stroll. We walk on red sand, so commonplace in Arizona, there are desert plants and twisted red sandstone rocks.

Warstwy piaskowca układają się w fale, wygładzone przez gwałtowne powodzie. Szlak oznaczony jest.. kamykami. Nawigacja nie jest trudna, po prostu obchodzimy grupę skał dookoła. Skały nazywają się 'The New Wave' i są namiastką właściwej "The Wave" dla tych, którzy nie mieli szczęścia w loterii.

Layers of sandstone form waves, polished by flash floods. The trail is marked with... little stones. Navigation is not difficult, we simply walk around the group of rock. They are called 'The New Wave' and are a consolation prize for those who were unlucky in "The Wave" permit lottery.

Hanging Garden Trail

Cały dzień to seria krótkich szlaków. Następnym etapem jest Hanging Garden Trail. To spacer niewielkim półwyspem wcinającym się od miasteczka Page w jezioro Powell. Dojdziemy do miejsca, gdzie w cieniu skał woda nie wyparowuje i daje szansę roślinom. Wśród czerwonego piaskowca powstał tam mały naturalny ogród.

The whole day is a series of short trips around Page. Our next step is Hanging Garden Trail. It is a short out and back footpath within a small peninsula jutting from Page into Lake Powell.  It leads to a place, where shadow allows water not to evaporate immediately and plants have a chance to grow. We will see a small natural garden among red sandstone rocks.

Gdy już dojdziemy do Hanging Gardens ('wiszących ogrodów'), warto odwrócić się w stronę jeziora Powell. Jesteśmy przy zachodnim krańcu tego długiego zbiornika. Woda, niebo i czerwone skały tworzą piękny kontrast. Zwracamy uwagę na warstwę białych skał. Później dowiemy się, że granica między czerwonymi a białymi warstwami to dawny poziom wody. Od kilku lat trwa susza i woda w zbiorniku drastycznie opada. Od dwóch dni mam nową górską fascynację (obsesję?) - Navajo Mountain, świętą górę narodu Diné. I nie pomijam żadnej okazji by uchwycić ją na zdjęciu.

When we reach Hanging Garden, it's worth turning towards Lake Powell. We are at the western end of this enormously long reservoir. Water, sky and red rocks create a picturesque contrast. We notice layers of white rocks. We will later learn that the line between red and white layers marks how high water used to be. There has been a prolonged drought and water levels are at historical low. Since two days prior, I had developed a new mountain obsession - Navajo Mountain, a sacred peak of the Diné. I never miss an opportunity to capture the fascinating mountain on a photo.

Horseshoe Bend

Głównym punktem programu jest Horseshoe Bend. O ile poprzednie szlaki nie przyciągają turystów, to zakręt rzeki Kolorado w kształcie podkowy zdecydowanie jest popularną atrakcją. Jak na atrakcję przystało, trzeba zapłacić za parking (10$). Poprzednio wspomniane szlaki są darmowe.

The highlight of our short trips around Page is Horseshoe Bend.  The two previous trails do not attract many people. But the bend of Colorado river is a very popular tourist spot. Where there are tourists, there's money to be made - we need to pay $10 for parking. The trails mentioned above are free.

Horseshoe Bend jest częścią kanionu Glen. Rzeka Kolorado napotkała tu twardszą skałę i musiała wyrzeźbić sobie obejście. Głębokość kanionu w tym miejscu to ponad 330m. Polecam spacer wzdłuż brzegu kanionu (z zachowaniem należytej ostrożności). Platforma widokowa z barierką jest zatłoczona turystami. A wystarczy odejść kilkadziesiąt metrów by mieć lepsze i niezmącone widoki.

The bend is an integral part of the Glen Canyon. The Colorado river had met here a harder rock and had to dig out a detour. The canyon walls are a sheer drop of 330m. I recommend a walk along the rim (with safety precautions). The viewing platform is secured, but it's crowded. If you walk just less than 100m away, you will have an unobstructed views of the breathtaking river bend. 

Lake Powell - Lone Rock Beach

Dzień jest przyjemny i ciekawy, ale nie intensywny. Szlaki mamy krótkie, dojazdy też. Na koniec postanowiliśmy zafundować sobie leniuchowanie nad jeziorem Powell. Pojechaliśmy na plażę Lone Rock Beach.

The day is pleasant and interesting, but far from intensive. Our trails are short and so are driving distances. We decided to end the day in an even more chilled-out manner. We drove to the Lone Rock Beach by Lake Powell.  (parking location).

Zostawiliśmy auto na parkingu i poszliśmy na plażę na piechotę, ale Amerykanie wjeżdżają kamperami nad samą wodę. Miejsca jest dosyć, pomiędzy biwakami są duże odstępy. Nie ma zjawiska parawaningu. Ja natychmiast zauważam, że w oddali widać Navajo Mountain. Ta góra przyciąga mnie jak magnes. Agnieszka robi genialne zdjęcie - jej aparat ma zoom znacznie lepszy od mojego.

We left our rental car at the parking. We noticed however that most Americans drove their campers all the way to the shore. There's enough space and the beach is not crowded. While searching for suitable spot, I immediately noticed Navajo Mountain. This peak draws me like a magnet. My friend took an excellent picture, with a better zoom that my camera's.

Short Trips Around Page, Arizona

Praktyczna uwaga: Utah i Arizona są w strefie czasowej Mountain Time Zone (MDT). Ale latem Arizona przechodzi na czas letni, a Utah nie. To powoduje godzinną różnicę czasu pomiędzy tymi stanami. W ciągu dnia wielokrotnie przekraczaliśmy granice tych stanów i podróżowaliśmy w czasie ;-)

Practical note: Utah and Arizona are in the same Mountain Time Zone (MDT). During spring, summer and early autumn, Utah doesn't go into Daylight Saving Time and Arizona does. This creates an hour time difference between the two states. During our trip we crossed the state border multiple times and traveled in time back and forth ;-)
