Petrified Forest National Park, Painted Desert and Meteor Crater, Arizona. US Road Trip 2026: Day 5.

Petrified Forest National Park located within Painted Desert are out-worldly places in Arizona. But if they were not enough, during the same day we stood "on a corner in Winslow, Arizona" (if you know "Take It Easy" by the Eagles) and later saw a huge meteor crater.

[POL] Park Narodowy Petrified Forest położony na obszarze 'Pustyni Pstrej' (Painted Desert) to miejsca nie z tej ziemi. Ale Arizona nigdy nie poprzestaje na jednej atrakcji. Tego samego dnia "staliśmy na rogu w Winslow, Arizona" (kto zna "Take It Easy" grupy the Eagles?) oraz na brzegu ogromnego krateru meteorytu.

The day was more driving that hiking. We did short walks to points of interest. The longest two were about 2km:

• Painted Desert Rim Trail - 2km, easy

• Blue Mesa Loop Trail - 1,6km, easy

• Crystal Forest Trail - 1,4km, easy

Can you image ancient tree logs turned into rocks? Not just plain grey rocks - imagine vivid colors of precious gems. Yes, trees that look like jewelry. This is Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. Look closely at the photo below. Now let it settle in - this a piece of a fallen tree!

[POL] Wyobraź sobie antyczne kłody drzew zamienione w skały. Ale nie jakieś zwykłe szare - wyobraź sobie żywe kolory kamieni szlachetnych. Właśnie tak - drzewa wyglądające jak biżuteria. Taki jest Petrified Forest National Park w Arizonie! Popatrz poniżej - to nie kamienie szlachetne, to skamieniałe drzewo!

Petrified Forest National Park offers an appetizer before the main course. Driving from the east on I-40, as we did, the first stop in the park is Painted Desert Visitor Center. The name suggests it is a mind-blowing place. Just have a peek below.

[POL] Park Narodowy Petrified Forest serwuje przystawkę przed daniem głównym. Zanim będziemy podziwiać drzewa zamienione w kolorowe skały, pierwszym przystankiem (jechaliśmy I-40 od wschodu) jest centrum informacyjne Painted Desert ('Malowana Pustynia' lub 'Pustynia Pstra').

We toured the colorful desert the American way - driving around and stopping for short walks, the longest being two kilometers (Painted Desert Rim Trail). The Petrified Forest road creates a semi loop from I-40 and then naturally leads into the main part of the park.

[POL] Malowaną Pustynię zwiedziliśmy po amerykańsku - objeżdżając drogą i zatrzymując się w kilku punktach widokowych. Jedyny spacer to dwa kilometry szlakiem Painted Desert Rim Trail.

The desert is composed of layers of sedimentary rocks that contain abundant iron and magnesium compounds, which are responsible for the warm colors. The rock formations are testimony to erosion - fast running water is responsible for the shapes and smoothed edges.

[POL] Pustynia zbudowana jest z warstw skał osadowych zawierających związki żelaza i magnezu, które dają żywe, ciepłe kolory. Pofałdowany teren i wygładzone powierzchnie skał to erozja spowodowana szybkim przepływem wody.

The desert that we can see here, is only a small fraction. It's vast area of badlands forming an arc of over 200km. Petrified Forest National Park occupies a part of the wilderness.

[POL] Pustynia, którą tu oglądamy jest tylko małym kawałkiem obszaru w formie łuku, ciągnącego się na ponad 200km. Park Narodowy chroni niewielką część tego obszaru.

At Pintado Point ('pintado' = painted in Spanish) I noticed white peaks far into the western horizon. My brain was processing this - the only high mountains in western Arizona are San Francisco Peaks... but I rejected this notion, as I thought they were too far to be seen. Then I checked an information board with a panorama - indeed, these were San Francisco Peaks, located 174km away as the crow flies. This is my far visibility record - hiking in the mountains of Poland, Slovakia and Czechia, the furthest views had been no more than 130km. 

[POL] Na jednym z przystanków, Pintado Point ('pintado' = 'malowany' w j. hiszpańskim), zauważyłem białe szczyty na zachodnim horyzoncie. Umysł podpowiada San Francisco Peaks - jedyne wysokie góry w zachodniej Arizonie - ale odrzuciłem tę myśl "za daleko, pewnie są jakieś inne góry po drodze...". W punkcie była tablica informacyjna z panoramą. Sprawdziłem - i rzeczywiście, widziałem góry oddalone o 174km w linii prostej. To jest mój osobisty rekord widoczności - w górach Polski, Słowacji i Czech najdalsze zaobserwowane widoki nie przekraczały 130km.

Driving south down the Petrified Forest Rd, we entered the main part of the park. We stopped to hike an easy Blue Mesa Loop. See a short video shot from the car, just before the parking lot.

[POL] Podjechaliśmy paręnaście kilometrów wzdłuż drogi Petrified Forest do głównej części parku. Zatrzymaliśmy się na łatwy trekking szlakiem Blue Mesa Loop. Wcześniej nagraliśmy krótkie wideo z drogi, tuż przed parkingiem.

The Blue Mesa Trail led us into a shallow canyon where we finally found out why the park was named Petrified Forest. Scattered at the bottom of the canyon were hundreds of broken logs - trees turned into colorful stones.

[POL] Szlak Blue Mesa ('niebieski stół') zaprowadził nas na dno płytkiego kanionu, gdzie odkryliśmy skąd wzięła się nazwa Petrified Forest ('Skamieniały Las').

It's hard to image what we saw. The eyes see a rock that looks like a conglomerate of giant precious stones. But the brain has to process the key information - these are not stones, what we see are petrified chunks of trees.

[POL] Trudno sobie wyobrazić to co zobaczyliśmy. Wzrok mówi - ogromne kamienie szlachetne. Ale wtedy dociera do nas - "przecież to są drzewa zamienione w kamień!"

Once upon a time there was a forest of giant trees. The trees died and fell into a river. Flush floods buried the trees under silt (broken grains of quartz) and silica entered the structure of the trees. Pressure and lack of oxygen and bacteria led to rapid petrification (it can happen in just several decades!). 

[POL] Dawno, dawno temu rósł sobie las. Ogromne drzewa usychały i wpadały do rzeki. Gwałtowne powodzie grzebały kłody pod warstwą mułu z kwarcem. Związki krzemu wnikały w drzewa, a ciśnienie oraz brak tlenu i bakterii spowodowały zamianę materiału organicznego w skałę (ten proces przebiega stosunkowo szybko - wystarczy kilkadziesiąt lat). 

Going further south, towards the Rainbow Forest Visitor Center, we stopped for another hike - Crystal Forest Trail. We saw more chunks, but here they were bigger and less scattered. We could see entire trees, only broken into pieces.

[POL] Jadąc w kierunku Rainbow Forest Visitor Center zatrzymaliśmy się na kolejny spacer - Crystal Forest Trail. Zobaczyliśmy kolejne drzewa zamienione w kolorowe kamienie. W tej części parku fragmenty były mniej rozproszone i mogliśmy zaobserwować praktycznie całe kłody.

I could end the post now and here. But Arizona had more for us that day. Heading west, we detoured from the I-40 highway to drive along the historic Route 66 through a sleepy town of Winslow. I am not an expert of the Eagles band's songs, but the tune of "Take It Easy" dwells somewhere in my head. Verse 2 mentions Winslow, Arizona.

[POL] Mógłbym tutaj zakończyć post. Ale Arizona miała dla nas więcej tego dnia. Jadąc na zachód wygodną autostradą I-40, zjechaliśmy na historyczną Route 66 do sennego Winslow. Nie jestem ekspertem od utworów grupy the Eagles, ale melodia "Take It Easy", gdzieś w głowie siedzi. Druga zwrotka wspomina Winslow w Arizonie, gdzie podmiot liryczny stoi na rogu i widzi dziewczynę w Fordzie.

If Arizona is out-worldly figuratively due to its diverse and surprising nature, then how about a genuine out-of-this-world place? Our last stop was a huge meteor crater. It is located some 30km west of Winslow, Arizona.

[POL] Arizona to w przenośni miejsce "nie z tego świata", jeśli popatrzymy na różnorodne i zaskakujące ukształtowanie terenu. Ale jest w Arizonie dosłownie miejsce nie z tego świata - ogromny krater meteorytu. Znajduje się ok. 30km na zachód od Winslow.

El Diablo (aka Barringer) Crater is about 1200m in diameter and its depth reaches 170m. It's a genuine meteorite impact crater, estimated to be 50,000 years old. Note - it is a private property and sight-seeing requires a ticket.

[POL] El Diablo Crater (znany również jako Barringer) ma około 1200m średnicy i jest głęboki na 170m. Jest to autentyczny krater powstały po uderzeniu meteorytu. Szacuje się, że uderzenie miało miejsce ok. 50tys. lat temu. Uwaga - krater jest własnością prywatną i za wstęp pobierane są opłaty.

Guides call the crater 'El Diablo' (from a nearby canyon). The crater's website calls it simply 'Meteor Crater'. Yet another name is Barringer Crater. The crater was bought (that's possible only in the USA!) by Daniel M. Barringer, who believed that the crater had been created by an iron meteorite (correct) and that he would be able to mine iron from under the debris (incorrect - the meteorite mostly vaporized on impact). Mr. Barringer spent a fortune on the crater - around $500,000 as of 1930s (which is more $9 million in today's dollars!). He didn't find iron. His descendants, though, found a 'gold mine' by turning the crater into a tourist attraction.

[POL] Przewodniki nazywają krater El Diablo (od nazwy pobliskiego kanionu). Strona www krateru to prostu 'Meteor Crater'. Możemy jednak spotkać się z nazwą Barringer Crater. Krater został kupiony (takie rzeczy tylko w Ameryce!) przez Daniela M. Barringera, który wierzył, że krater powstał w wyniku uderzenia meteorytu (to się zgadza). Pan Barringer był przekonany, że pod kamieniami znajdzie żelazny trzon meteorytu (i tu błąd - meteoryt prawie w całości wyparował w momencie uderzenia). Barringer wydał niemałą fortunę na zakup ziemi i poszukiwanie żelaza (500tys. dolarów w 1930, co obecnie przekłada się na około 9 milionów dolarów!). Jego potomkowie znaleźli lepszy sposób na zwrot z inwestycji - zamienili krater w atrakcję turystyczną.

Standing atop the crater rim, I looked around and found two features of the vast horizon that I could recognize. To the west, I saw the above mentioned San Francisco Peaks. Much closer now, they were clearly visible. To the north east, I noticed a group of buttes that rang a bell. A moment of processing in my brain and then - "Eureka! This must be Monument Valley" (see my post from last year - up and close at the iconic place).

[POL] Stojąc na brzegu krateru, rozejrzałem się po rozległym horyzoncie. Na zachodzie dominowały widziane już wcześniej San Francisco Peaks, teraz znacznie bliżej i dobrze widoczne. Ale na północnym wschodzie zauważyłem dziwnie znajomą grupę ostańców. Po chwili "Eureka - to jest przecież Monument Valley" (polecam lekturę mojego postu z poprzedniego roku, kiedy miałem okazję zobaczyć to ikoniczne miejsce z bliska).   

Long and well spent day ended in Williams. This town would be our first place with more than one night. The next day one would be of the two highlights of the whole 2026 trip - getting down into the Grand Canyon (and back).

[POL] Na koniec długiego i pełnego wrażeń dnia dotarliśmy do Williams. To miasto będzie dla nas pierwszym miejscem, gdzie spędzimy więcej niż jedną noc. Kolejnego dnia czeka nas jedno z dwóch głównych punktu programu całej wyprawy w 2026r - zejście na dno (i powrót) Wielkiego Kanionu.
